“What’s your favorite sex scene?” This question is the starting point of Marlene Denningmann’s first solo exhibition in Berlin, presented at — and created specifically for — the Neun Kelche project space. A large single-channel video installation is set up in a dimly lit room. A carpet and cushions invite visitors to sit down for the roughly half-hour video work and to contemplate the show’s title and the question in the room – Do you have a fave?
Three people lie on gray-blue cushions on the floor, conversing without making direct eye contact. Intimacy coordinator Marit Östberg, film scholar Elena Baumeister, and performer Melanie Jame Wolf exchange stories about their first encounters with sex scenes in media and the ones that left the strongest impressions. Through their words, they recreate these scenes, while the background remains black and the scenes themselves go unseen. Our minds paint the scenes they describe. Yet, as the scenes are recounted, it becomes immediately evident that sex is often left incomplete in films – hinted at rather than fully shown, as the camera pans away from the protagonists.
In one corner of the exhibition space, three small monitors display Sex Edits – well-known film and television scenes where sex is addressed, shown, or implied. Denningmann contrasts classic male gaze representations, like scenes from Blow-Up, with scenes portraying sex from a FLINTA* (female, lesbian, intersex, non-binary, trans, agender) perspective.
With her video work, Marlene Denningmann reopens the discourse around sex in film and television. Fulfilling sex scenes require conversations and open questions about what feels comfortable for all involved. In this spirit, Do you have a fave? invites visitors not only to reflect on their favorite on-screen scenes but also to open a dialogue about sex and how it can be fulfilling for all participants, including the viewers.
